Eva is our little surprise puppy. We had seriously considered a staffy before we got Haku, and we definitely would have wanted a Tess puppy had we decided on a stafford. Just happened that Eva was looking for a home about the same time we moved into our new house and Bruce decided that it was time for him to get a puppy too! A little crazy, but, hey, what's one more?
My theory is that staffords are very primitive dogs. Bruce describes Eva as 'shark-like', she spends her time deciding if she can either eat or destroy things. The funny part is that I find her an incredibly (almost freakishly) intelligent dog that is extremely trainable. You show Eva how to get what she wants and she will move mountains to make it happen. That's the thing about Eva, she takes the most direct route to what she wants ... one way or another. Watch your knees.
Eva is very much like her mother in both personality and athletic ability. Not a gregarious dog, she likes HER people and HER dogs. In fact, she loves to annoy our dogs to no end with her 'obnoxious submissiveness', and you can tell she does it deliberately to get a rise out of them. She is a powerhouse, that's for sure, and she quite enjoys a good full speed body slam where she takes off about 12 feet away and SLAMS into you .... whether you know she's coming or not. A natural athlete, she's remarkably agile and quick for a dog shaped like a cinderblock. Eva has no concept of 'gentle', 'subtle' or 'careful'. She knows how to swear in staffy and isn't afraid to tell me what she thinks. Oh yes, Eva is a true bitch. I can't see her being left alone with free roam of the house ... ever.
Eva is just a party to live with, incredibly fun to train, who loves to play, loves to tug, loves to fetch and loves to problem solve and train. She has her sensitive side too. She's actually quite cuddly when things are quiet, she loves belly rubs and not getting out of bed in the morning. While she's not terribly aware of subtle moods, she hates it when people are upset or to get in trouble.
I have very much enjoyed adding a stafford to the family, different though she is I would take another in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, it is unlikely I would ever attempt to have two at once. Eva gets along well with our crew but already has limited tolerance for other dogs. Poco has been teaching her well how to take over the Head Bitch position in our household, and Eva is learning well.
